Riccia

Riccia, also known sometimes as crystalwort, is a North American species.

Description: This plant is a floating fern with Kelly green, submerged, threadlike leaves about 1.5cm long. It is rootless. Under good conditions, it grows rapidly. This plant has branching, threadlike leaves that grow in an interlocking mass. The plant reproduces asexually by means of division and sexually by means of spores.

Environment: This plant tolerates pHs from 6.5 to 7.5. Optimum temperature ranges from 20-30°C (68-85°F).

Geographic Range: North America along the Eastern seaboard of the US.

Uses: This species grows rapidly out of control and shades out other less robust plants. It can clog filters and interfere with nets, etc. It is useful as a food for pacus, silver dollars, goldfish, etc. It is also useful in nest construction for fish like dwarf gouramis and other bubble-nest builders. Some plants spawning killifish will lay eggs in it.

Care: This plant requires bright light and rich water. Given these it grows lushly and rapidly. Otherwise, no special care is required.
