Pond Snail The Pond Snail, is small conical, dark brown snail.Size: This snail reaches 1cm (0.4 inches) in length. Description: This snail is dark brown and shaped as a spiral cone.Environment: This species tolerates pHs from 6.5 to 7.5 while preferring the lower end (acidic) of this range. Water hardness is not critical although low hardness is preferable. Optimum temperature ranges from 20-30°C (68-85°F). Geographic Range: Northern Hemisphere.Temperament: This species can be kept with any fish that do not eat snails or harass it too much. Some snail eating fish including many cichlids, puffers and goldfish find these snails delectable. Feeding: Feeding is simple, it eats any fish foods. It has a hearty appetite so it is necessary to insure access to food.Breeding: This snail is hermaphroditic, each snail being male and female. Any two mature snails will mate. Afterwards, a fertilized snail will lay a clear jellylike egg case consisting 50-100 eggs on a hard surface or plant leaf below the water line. The eggs hatch in 10-14 days and the small snails grow rapidly. With adequate food, these babies will be laying their own egg cases in 2 weeks. These snails can rapidly overpopulate an aquarium and are very difficult to eradicate once established.
