Live Foods The feeding of live foods is a critical factor in the successful rearing of many species of tropical fishes. Fish fed live foods are generally healthier, more colorful and better prepared for spawning than are fish fed only prepared foods. A diet of only live foods is not necessary, periodic supplemental feeding of live foods is adequate to reap the benefits. In fact, many fish nutritional studies indicate that a diet of prepared foods with small feedings of live foods may be the optimal feeding regimen for fish growth and health.Many live food organisms are simple to culture and can be reared in sufficient quantities by hobbyists with a minimum of effort and space. Below is a list of the live food organisms Goliad Farms produces for its internal purposes and recommends highly for all aquarists. Click on the name of a species for information and cultural practices about that species. Starter cultures of these organisms are available from many fine providers.
