Genus Xiphophorus

Goliad Farms, LP, raises many representatives of the genus Xiphophorus.

Xiphophorus has at least sixteen species and includes platies and swordtails. The genus is native to Mexico and Central America. Like all Poeciliidae, the Xiphophorines are characterized by the males having an anal fin (called a gonopodium) modified for the injection of sperm into the females, who are livebearing. Poeciliidae females are often able to store sperm for later use, allowing them to have multiple broods from a single mating.

The genus Xiphophorus  includes at least the following species:

     X. alvarezi 'Blue Swordtail'
     X. andersi 'Atoyac Swordtail Platy'
     X. clemenciae 'Yellow Swordtail'
     X. cortezi 'Cortez Swordtail'
     X. couchianus 'Monterrey Platy'
     X. evelynae 'Pueblo Platy'
     X. gordoni 'Northern Platy'
     X. helleri 'Swordtail'
     X. maculatus 'Platy or Moon'
     X. milleri 'Catemaco Platy'
     X. montezumae 'Montezuma Swordtail'
     X. nigrensis 'Dwarf Swordtail'
     X. pygmaeus 'Pygmy Swordtail'
     X. signum 'Comma Swordtail'
     X. variatus 'Variegated Platy'
     X. xiphidium 'Swordtail Platy'

Goliad Farms produces X. helleri, X. maculatus and X. variatus, mostly commercial hybrids of these species. For the platies and swordtails we produce, please click on one of the following links:
